Space Traveler Reveals Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Harassment Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also carried celebrity crewmates.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, referring to a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.

She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her background – was drowned out under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following achieving her goal, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose kindness were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She added that even with the backlash, considerable good had resulted from the mission, including elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that passed the Kármán line of outer space.

The team of pioneers also comprised accomplished professionals from different industries.

The company behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
