Larry Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is leaving the governing body at OpenAI, just a week after a collection of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became publicly available.
He stated in a statement that he was "grateful for the chance to have served, optimistic about the prospects of the company, and look forward observing their development".
The prominent academic, who previously presided over the Ivy League institution, stated on Monday that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The recently released emails revealed that the official exchanged messages with the financier until the eve of the financier's 2019 apprehension for alleged sex trafficking of young people.
In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company expressed it accepted Summers' determination to depart.
"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the directors," the company commented.
Political Context
This news comes after both chambers of Congress agreed on Tuesday to pass a legislation that would require the Department of Justice to disclose its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The measure will afterward proceed to the administration of the White House for signature. The President has said he expects to endorse the legislation, after reversing his position on the subject following pushback from his supporters.
Correspondence Findings
A collection of financier-linked messages disclosed by the Congressional committee days ago mentioned multiple high-profile figures in the financier's previous network, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those figures.
The messages showed that the professor and the financier often met for meals, with he often attempting to connect the official to prominent world leaders.
Individual Statement
After the messages were released with the wider community, the former official said he assumed "full responsibility for my misguided choice to continue interacting with the financier".
He further stated that he wanted "to restore faith and repair relationships with the persons most important to me".
Professional History
The professor occupied high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; serving as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under Barack Obama.
He headed Harvard from the early 2000s and is still a professor there. When announcing his withdrawal from public roles recently on this week, he indicated he would persist with his teaching commitments.
Additional Consequences
Following his declaration on Monday, the policy organization, a progressive think tank in the capital where the professor was a researcher, announced that Summers was ceased to be affiliated with the institution.
The former official entered the board of OpenAI, which develops the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its top executive OpenAI's head.
