Three members of law enforcement perished and more than a dozen additional individuals got wounded in a seemingly premeditated blast caused by gas at a country home in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The blast occurred as officers and emergency crews entered the house in the vicinity of Verona to enforce an removal notice for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

The three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals were taken into custody at the site and a third person who ran away subsequent to the incident was located soon after. The trio have been admitted to medical facility.

The blast could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the location displayed the structure left as a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who noted that previous tries had been made to evict the three siblings in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The leader of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, said the farmhouse was subject to an eviction order due to debts accrued by the three owners.

Mediators had been dispatched to talk with the family members who had secured themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the siblings caused the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief Commander Papagno informed the media.

A propane tank had been set off, and the explosion precisely impacted our personnel,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also located at the property, the minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the blast consisted of 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a firefighter.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

The official was convinced the detonation had occurred on a story above the entrance and informed reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the blast, he revealed members had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas canisters being activated”.

Neighbor Statements

“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants told Italian media, mentioning that the three had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto united with other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three men who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
