Federal authorities has entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant response by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, investigations and potential further challenges.
