At least 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio de Janeiro's Largest Police Raid on Organized Crime
No less than 64 civilians died in a security raid targeting the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the most extensive and fatal action in the area's history.
Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, local authorities reported. More than 80 suspects were taken into custody.
Intense confrontations broke out when around 2,500 security personnel initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho responded with armed resistance, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, officials said.
The International human rights organization stated it felt "shocked" by the security action, urging "prompt and effective investigations".
Operation Impact
The area of favelas adjacent to Rio's airport is considered to be the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.
State officials stated no less than 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Dozens of people were injured, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Locals have compared the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "battlefield" since the mission commenced.
